Since being founded by Terry Looney in 1995, STX has evolved to become a very diverse supplier of a wide range of products and services. STX offers Intelligent Solutions™ to a broad range of clients.
Services range from Intelligent Lab Design to Professional Project Management. Product lines provide solutions for the modern laboratory across the full spectrum of disciplines and applications.
Our business is really quite simple. We just try to treat our clients right and follow the roadmap of doing each job well.
Marketing 101 - Find a need and fill it... we found two!
STX’s business has been developed around two market needs we identified as being critical.
First, we found that the market lacked a strong mid-Atlantic partner for the distribution of analytical instrumentation. We knew that with our industry wide knowledge and relationships and our local presence we could fill that need.
Second, with over 25 years in the lab industry, we saw that far too many labs were being built without sufficient consideration begin given to their applications. There seemed to be a default to a one-size-fits-all approach and too little attention to detail. For that, we knew there was a better way... and we set out to find a way to deliver it. We believe that our model of applications driven “Intelligent Lab Design” is the answer.
Marketing 102 - Expand your value to your client base, by offering better options
Today, STX provides not just custom labs, but also custom products. We have carried that concept of asking how a product can be improved into our manufacturing through our concept of “Intelligent Product Design”. This strategy allows us to custom produce solutions to a wide variety of needs.
Marketing 103 - Expand your client base by developing a quality reputation
As a result of these Intelligent Solutions™ models and strong, loyal partnerships with our preferred suppliers and key clients, our business continues to expand.
Going forward, our business model is unique and solid, our Intelligent Solutions™ strategies are state-of-the-art, and our results are world class.
Where STX is going next...
As to our future, it’s really up to our clients. As long as we keep doing our job well, we think they will reward us with their business. That’s what partnerships are all about. And, that’s what STX is all about.
Terry Looney, President of STX, founded the company in 1995. Previously, Terry worked in the analytical instrument industry for 20 years. His resume includes Sales and Marketing Management and Product Management experience at Varian, Waters, and ATI. Terry has an MBA from the University of Richmond, has been married for over 30 years (all to the same patient woman!), and has three grown children (of which he is exceedingly proud). When he has a moment free, he likes to golf and make frequent visits to the beach. (His golf game is struggling, but his beach skills are superb!)
Terry insists that our company's constant focus is on making our customers happy and he welcomes your call to ensure your complete satisfaction in working with us.
Jay Young, Project Consultant - Virginia & Maryland. One of the original employees of the Company, Jay came to STX from VWR Scientific where he served for 15 years and was a standout salesperson in their Lab Furniture program. Prior to that, Jay was a Pharmaceutical sales rep for A.H/Robins (now Wyeth) for 7 years. Jay has a Chemistry degree from the University of Richmond, has been blissfully married for almost 35 years, and has two grown children. His son is a Lieutenant in the Navy proudly serving his country. During his (infrequent) free time he enjoys all sports, is an avid Redskin's fan, and expels a lot of energy by punishing that little round ball on the golf course.
Jay fervently believes that customer satisfaction is paramount to success, and takes great strides to ensure that the company's clients are treated with respect and professionalism.
Lance Daniels, Project Consultant – Charlotte, NC Office. Lance handles sales for both North and South Carolina. He has over 25 years of sales experience in controlled environment markets. Lance has a BSBA in Marketing from Appalachian State University and is married with two sons. In his spare time, Lance stays busy with the “honey do” list but has been known to sneak out on occasions and enjoy a game of golf or throw the fishing line out.
Lance’s goals are simple – to offer creative and valuable solutions to customer problems and make sure clients are 100% satisfied with STX projects.
Robert (Bob) Hester, Senior Project Manager. Bob has over 25 years experience in the semiconductor and pharmaceutical industries as a Facilities Manager, Facilities Engineer and Project Manager (for General Electric and various start-up operations). Bob understands our client’s need for on-time and on-budget project completions. He has a Mechanical Engineering degree from the University of Texas and has two grown children. His son is following in his footsteps as a Project Manager and his daughter is a junior in college. Bob enjoys playing golf and bowling. He is much better bowler than golfer. (Notice a company-wide trend here?)
Bob’s approaches every project with these simple goals: Complete every project on budget and on schedule, and ensure the client is 100% satisfied.
Dennis Campbell, Project Consultant – Municipal Projects. Dennis has lived in Roanoke all of his life except for when he was away at college. He graduated from James Madison University in 1976 and has been married for over 30 years (and yes, that was to the same lovely lady). He has three grown children who are a great asset to society and of whom he is very proud. Dennis’ work experience has included management for a building material distribution center, and sales for various companies.
Dennis believes in relationship selling and providing the customer with a product/service that all parties are happy with today and for many tomorrows.
Angelique Skipper, Project Controller. Angelique received her BS in Accounting from Strayer University. She is a member of the American Institute of Certified Accountants and American Society of Women Accountants (Richmond chapter). Her experience includes 12 years in the accounting industry, with emphasis on contractual law and cost management. Angelique celebrates over 9 years of marriage to a wonderful man. She enjoys spending time with her family (including her spoiled black lab, Midnight), traveling, and reading tax law publications and mystery novels.
Angelique works closely with our clients, project management team, and accounting staff to ensure that our projects are in alignment with STX mission statement to “…manage the burden to deliver integral, seamless, and painless projects.”
Sam(antha) Toney, Sales and Marketing Administrator, is the friendly Customer Service and Inside Sales voice at STX. Prior to joining our team, Sam spent over 10 years working in the medical field devoted to quality patient care and patient advocacy, with undergraduate studies in Biology and Nursing. She is lighthearted and outgoing, yet serious. She cares deeply about people and undertakes every task with dedication to an excellent, pleasing end result. With a love for the outdoors Sam tries to spend as much time as her full life will allow, camping, hiking, backpacking and canoeing, with the love of her life (her husband of over 20 years) and their two wonderful children (all grown up now).
Sam offers STX clients the opportunity to work with someone who by nature and by experience is passionately committed to listening, communicating, and to ensuring quality outcomes uniquely fitted to the needs of each client. She looks forward to your call and to being involved in your project.
Life is either a daring adventure or nothing.
